Cut Copy is an Electropop band from Melbourne, Australia, consisting of Dan Whitford, Tim Hoey and Mitchell Scott. The trio's sound lends heavily from 80s New Wave and Post Punk genres, yet you can't call it Retro.
Managed by Punkdafunk, and signed to Modular Recordings, Cut Copy made their way to the dance scene quickly. They've toured with Daft Punk and Franz Ferdinand in Australia.
Together with a band called Midnight Juggernauts, Cut Copy helped Melbourne become a major music city in Ozz. Add The Presets (from Sydney) to the list and Australia seems home to some very promising crossover acts today. What's the secret here?
We had a chat with Tim Hoey who claims he's making music because washing dishes didn't work out :)
Right now Australia seems home to the best Dance Music live acts worldwide. Is every Aussie party headlined by a live act these days? Are DJs "dead" over there?
"I think the lines are blurred more now between club nights and indie nights. When we first started we loved shifting the context of our music. We would set up and play 4 to the floor dance music in more indie venues and then the next week we would set up our show in dance clubs on the dance floor play the more dance orientated songs alongside the more abrasive guitar songs. I think crowds now have kind of crossed over. We still DJ all the time and there is still certainly a platform for DJ’s in our country."
